Conformed to culture instead of Christ
Romans 12:2 "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may 'prove what is good and acceptable and perfect will of God."
The Emergent church will not get a clue of what Gods will is because they are so tied down and into what the world has to offer. You cannot have your mind renewed while keeping it full of what the world has to offer or practicing occult rituals like centering prayer or lectio for a quick fix.
I have been snooping around Dan Kimballs site a bit to kind of see where the guys heads is at.
Dan states in his Appendix B: A personal plea to emerging leaders who are starting a new worship gathering in an existing church the following.
"I beg you to be engaged with the culture-absolutely. But do not become polluted by the culture. If you are a missionary, you need to be engaged with the culture and know the culture as any missionary should. But we must not allow culture to shape us to the point we are no longer walking in holiness." end quote
Well I guess that all sounds kinda good but lets look at a couple things.
We need to be engaged with the people within the culture-not the culture itself. Missionaries do not engage in pagan rituals with the natives but yet they minister and preach the gospel to the natives.
Lets talk about walking in holiness.
Dan promotes and has a link to buying the Violent Femmes latest CD.
I was still playing in the secular in the 80's so I know who the Violent Femmes are. And trust me folks these guys are not a Christian band and they don't pretend to be. Im sure that Dan knows who they are and yet he promotes this band on his website.
I clicked on the links and saw promotions for the Sex Pistols CD and Iggy Pop.
Well Dan do you think that Emergents will start diving on light bulbs and opening up their chests the way Iggy did back in the day?
And yes I think Brian Setzer is a very good guitar player but whats your point in promoting the world on your site?
Did Brian get saved? If he did thats great but Im not sure why all you Emergent folks want to keep a foot in the world and try to keep a foot in the church.
We are surrounded everywhere we go by secular music. Shopping malls, stores etc.. But whats the point of a guy promoting secular music as he is promoting worship music.
And this a main Emergent leader.
A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. ( James 1:8)
To be a friend of the world is to be a enemy of God.(read 1 John 2:15-16)
What do these verses say to you Emergent folk?
Here is a warning from The Lord Jesus to you Emergent folk from Amos 5:21-24
"I hate, I despise your feast days, And I do not savor your sacred assemblies. Through you offer Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept them, Nor will I regard your fattened peace offerings. Take away from Me the noise of your songs, For I will not hear the melody of your stringed instruments. But let justice run down like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream."

Dan thanks for your reply.I think you made my point though. Why would the guy choose to remain in the Violent Femmes if he is a Christian?
And yes I have heard many a musician state that they can reach other people that some can't. And I also know players who are Christian that play both secular and Christian gigs.
But has VF changed there act since the days of touring with The Prentenders?
Im not being hypocritical though. I have no control over blog links or who the next blog is or what they are into. I'm sure you know that.
However on your website you have total control over whats on it.
You decide what goes on it so you are accountable.
You have to add the links in yourself (or your webmaster does it).
So thats a strawman argument.
Sorry I did not know that the Violent Femmes lead singer has recorded a worship CD. Thanks for clearing that one up.
I also notice that you did not answer my question on your website.
Do you believe that all paths lead to God?
Why not set the record straight?
Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to God?
I don't think my comments are silly at all.
You have a lot of influence.
Why not be a influence for good and point people toward Christ.
Not toward world plus Jesus.
Bad combination and it makes weak Christians if the folks are being saved at all.
Be a influence for good instead of evil.
Renounce the pagan rituals you endorse.
Then go back and tell people you were wrong to let them know you could keep in their sinful ways and practice pagan rituals like Lectio, centering prayer and labyrinths.
Jesus said if you love me you will keep my commandments.
You folks are big on throwing the love word around.
But have a hard time flushing the worlds ways and methods.
Which is really showing no love at all.
I want to make a correction. I replied thinking it was Dan Kimball who posted. Reason being the link was back to Dans site. But anyone could have used the link plus the post was signed as Dan
For your info. the lead singer of the zvilent.
So whether this was Dan Kimball or one of Dans followers my response would have been the same. As well as my question for all you Emergent folk.
Do you believe all paths lead to God. Do you believe anyone could be saved other than through Jesus Christ. Saved meaning going to heaven to live eternally with God instead of going to hell for a eternity of torment.
If you really truly want to know what Dan thinks on your questions...go to www.emergentvillage.com and read "A Response To Our Critics." He was part of the team that wrote that. Jon
